INTRODUCTION TO CARBINE

WHY WOULD I EVER NEED A CARBINE?

Simple. Accurate. Safe.

In the average city neighborhood, it is approximately 45 feet, or 15 yards from your front door to the curb where a car is parked outside. Often times, the length of hallways or the line of site distances inside your home far exceeds 15 yards. In a fight for your life, when your heart and respiration rates are through the roof, putting a rifle stock to your shoulder, lining up your sights, then making a decision on whether or not to press the trigger might be a better option than relying on your handgun marksmanship skills at such distances. With the proper training, carbines quickly become quite simple to use, are extremely accurate and just might be a safer option to employ for defensive purposes. Depending on where you live (an apartment, a dense urban environment, a subdivision, etc.), a carbine chambered in a pistol caliber such as 9mm, rather than the typical .223 / 5.56 rifle caliber might be a good option to explore. For more information, follow this link to our Media page to watch our CNN interview: AR-15 Style Rifle Report

I HAVE OWNED A CARBINE FOR YEARS...

HOW WOULD THIS TRAINING BENEFIT ME?

Have you ever fired a few rounds down range from standing, reloaded your carbine, then moved to prone and fired a few more? Was your sling set up just right, or did it get hung up as you moved to the ground? Was your stock correctly adjusted to suit your body, or did you have a hard time lining things up again after changing positions?

Are your iron sights and/or red dot zeroed to allow for accurate engagements at close quarters AND out to 500+ yards?

Do you have a basic understanding of your projectile’s ballistics, how wind may affect your intended point of impact and how to apply simple holds to make corrections in real time?

No matter your level of experience, mastery of the fundamentals is the pathway to proficiency.

INTRODUCTION TO CARBINE

$225.00

Current Skillset Requirement

This is a basic, entry level training course.  No prior experience with a carbine is required. The goal of the course is to have a great time together, while learning the fundamentals of effectively operating a semi-automatic magazine fed rifle.  All that is required is a positive outlook and the ability to safely manipulate a firearm while in the presence of others.

Course Overview

  • Establishing a fundamental understanding of:
    • Projectile ballistics
    • Barrel twist
    • Parallax associated with optics
    • Sight/optic height over bore
    • Co-witnessing of iron sights with optics
  • Setting up your carbine and sling to suit the individual shooter
  • Sling manipulations
  • Zeroing your iron sights and/or red dot (or VPO)
  • Steel target engagement work at 50, 100, 150 and 200 yards
  • Speed and administrative reloading
  • Clearing of malfunctions

Gear

  • Seasonally appropriate clothing including:
    • Closed toe shoes
    • Long pants for kneeling and shooting from prone
    • Baseball style hat
  • Shirts:
    • No low cut tops. Hot brass down the shirt is never fun.
    • Long sleeves are preferable when laying down in the prone position
  • Carbine fitted with:
    • A sling is to a carbine as a holster is to a pistol. Slings are mandatory for this course. See recommendation below.
    • Iron sights, red dot optic, or both
    • Note: Use VPO's such as 1-6 or 1-8 are acceptable
    • See images and descriptions of acceptable firearms below
  • 2 or more magazines
  • Magazine carrier if you have one - if not, simply put your extra magazine in your back pocket
  • 200 rounds of ammo (see below)
  • Knee and/or elbow pads are optional. We don't typically wear them, but feel free to bring them if you would like to.
  • Shooting mat to lay on (optional). Yoga mats work pretty well.
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Water, lunch and snacks
  • Note taking gear

If you are unsure of your gear, what you need or how to set it up, we are more than happy to help you.  That is what we are here for!

Firearms

We call this a carbine course because so many people own AR-15 style rifles chambered in 5.56 / .223 - but - this course is not limited to AR's in rifle calibers.

The following platforms are certainly acceptable as well:

  • Bullpup style rifles
  • Pistol caliber carbines (rifles in 9mm, .40 caliber, etc)
  • AR-15's in .22 caliber
  • Sub-gun style platforms in pistol calibers (all NFA and BATF rules apply) - see Alternate Firearms images below

Not sure if what you have will work?  Give us a call or send us an email.

Note: This course is for semi-auto firearms only.  No full auto weapons will be allowed.  All NFA and BATF rules must be adhered to at all times.

Ammunition

200 rounds is required for the course.

Having trouble finding ammo?  It is not as tough as you might think.

You might try the below sites:

https://www.sgammo.com/

https://supervelammunition.com/

Note: Super Vel is our go to ammunition manufacturer.

Armor piercing and incendiary rounds are NOT allowed under any circumstances.

Can I bring my .22 caliber AR-15?  Absolutely! The fundamentals of shooting will not change no matter the caliber you are shooting.  Bring your .22 and enjoy the savings in ammo cost.

If you have trouble finding ammo or are not sure what to purchase - caliber, grains, projectile type... we are happy to help.  Just give us a call or send an email.

Food and Drinks

Be sure and arrive in the morning with your lunch, snacks and drinks on hand. You will not have time to make a trip into town and back during the lunch break.

If you have a firearm manufactured as pistol with a stock on it, or a short barreled rifle (SBR), or any firearm with a suppressor, it must be registered with the ATF in order to use it during this course.  Supporting documentation will be required prior to beginning training.  No exceptions will be made.

Pistol Brace Update #1

As of November 8, 2023

The case of Britto v. ATF challenged the ATF’s “Factoring Criteria for Firearms with Attached ‘Stabilizing Braces'” rule. The ATF created the regulation (2021R-08F) after a presidential executive order directed them to deal with pistol braces. On Wednesday November 8, 2023, Texas-based Federal District Court judge Judge Kacsmaryk issued a nationwide stay preventing the ATF from enforcing its rule on pistols equipped with stabilizing devices (braces). The ATF is likely to appeal the decision.

For the time being, firearms with attached pistol braces are acceptable for use in our training courses, without proof of registration.

Note: A pistol brace is not a stock.

If you are unsure of the difference, feel free to contact us.

Pistol Brace Update #2

As of June 13, 2024

FORT WORTH, TX (June 13, 2024) – Firearms Policy Coalition announced a major legal victory in its Mock v. Garland lawsuit challenging the “pistol brace” ban rule issued by the BATF. In the decision, United States District Court Judge Reed O’Connor granted summary judgment in favor of FPC and its co-plaintiffs and issued a final judgment and order vacating the ATF’s rule. The case and opinion can be found at FPCLegal.org
